Stephen Shivkumar is a seasoned professional with over 20 years experience in consulting services and the adult education business. In 2003, he founded Building Blocks Technologies to service the needs of corporate enterprise clients in the public and private sectors, Canada-wide and internationally where possible. Prior to this, he was involved in establishing an IT-Professional Services company, which went public in May 2000; creating international conferences from concept to completion; and managing resources on complex projects.
Stephen has extensive hands-on experience in all aspects of emerging technology companies, including evaluation of companies’ technology, financial business structuring, management team assessment, and human resources management, such as recruitment and retention of employees.
Mr. Shivkumar is a Business Marketing graduate from Algonquin College in Ottawa Canada. As part of his commitment to life-long learning, he has continued to upgrade his skills both professional and technical. He keeps current in his field through extensive networking activities at conferences, seminars and other events in the IT community.
Luc Duquette is a Chartered Accountant with over 23 years of experience in accounting, finance and administration. Luc joined Building Blocks in 2003 in the capacity of CFO. As such, he is responsible for supporting the company’s growth, including strategic financial planning, banking and overseeing accounting activities as well as taxation activities. His work experience in senior financial roles in the technology and construction industries have provided him with the skills to operate and perform in fast-paced, growing and ever changing environments.
Luc holds a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, with a specialty in accounting from the University of Quebec in Hull. He is a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants since 1988.
Director, Learning Solutions
Ian Hornby has been involved in policy analysis, communications and group facilitation work for more than 30 years. His work has been as diverse as spokesperson for Energy and Pollution Probe, energy policy advisor, press secretary to the Minister for International Trade, National Crime Prevention Week coordinator, and Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Parole Board.
Since leaving government in 1994 he has become a leading specialist in alternative regulatory and legislative analysis, providing his services to many government departments (Industry, Treasury Board, Transport, Citizenship and Immigration, CCRA, Fisheries and Oceans), and notably the departments and agencies in the Health portfolio.
His background and work straddles the two disciplines of policy analysis and communications. This combination has made him extremely adept at designing consultation plans, facilitating stakeholder meetings and training public servants. He has been providing a suite of cutting-edge workshops to public servants for the past fifteen years. In joining with Building Blocks in 2009, he brings with him a wealth of insights into the way government works and how to develop compelling policy proposals.
Ian Hornby holds an MPA from Harvard University and is trained as a training designer and provider.
Director, Digital Innovation
Trained in Computer Sciences, Marcelo has been involved in the field of IT product development for over 12 years. Having worked in several roles including Web Producer, Creative Director and Director of Online Communities, Marcelo brings a wealth of experience in the areas of Internet, Design, Corporate Identity and Brand Development, Business Intelligence and Project Management.
Prior to Building Blocks, Marcelo led the Canadian production branch at ePALS, the world’s largest K-12 social education network. Notable projects include:
- product development for MIT’s OLPC ($100 Laptop) program,
- branding integration of National Geographic and ePALS
- design of the first mobile educator-supervised email system for schools,
- Friendship through Education initiative for the Executive Office of the Vice-President of the United States in response to the September 11 attacks,
- Netdays Europe,
- NASA Space Day Design Challenges, and
- web projects for several GoC departments and agencies.
Throughout the years, Marcelo helped dozens of clients bring their products and services online by providing strategical advice and deliverables.
